Musical Saturday :)

Sorry for lack of post yesterday, was busy with stuff. Starting my summer job next week so I can't write everyday. My parents are at Desifest 2011 in Toronto. I didn't go because it's pretty chilly and it might rain and it is an outdoor event. I hate the feeling of soggy clothes and wet socks. Yuck.

Anyway, I decided to check out their lineup and liked this song.

Shinee's Japanese version of Replay. The video is pretty meh. At least, Onew does not have the ugly hair he sported in Lucifer and Key is blond.

A new K-pop group called Boyfriend. I like to call them Shinee2.0. I don't really like them but maybe I'll learn to like them like I did with Shinee.

Intro to Bollywood Actresses (Part 2)

Sorry for the late post. I had to go to Toronto. I live in one of the suburbs.

The younger actresses in Bollywood are pretty. Some are good artists, others are just a beautiful face. Some started and hence have been longer in the industry. Others are relatively new. Some of the actress take on challenging roles while others are content being just a pretty face in the movie.

Kareena Kapoor

Source: maxgone.com
She is currently ranked as the top actress in Bollywood. In her earlier films she was a let down. However, she totally charmed me with her performance in Jab We Met. Ex of Shahid and currently girlfriend of Saif Ali Khan.

Bipasha Basu

Source: timesofindia.com
One of India's hottest actresses. Super hot and sexy and has a screen presence. She is doing a movie with Josh Hartnett.

Katrina Kaif

Source: bollywoodworld.com

Katrina is a pretty lass whose movies have succeeded despite her bad acting.

Priyanka Chopra

Source: chakpak.com

I think she is an okay actress but at least she exudes some charisma onscreen unlike Katrina. She was a former Miss World just like Aishwarya.

Deepika Padukone

Source: bollyupdates.com

She was one of India's top model. She's got lovely eyes and she is an okay actress. I think she needs to challenge herself in the acting department.

Anushka Sharma

Source: Anushka.co.in
I love this girl. I think she is a good actress and she has a bright personality also. She'll be one of the top actresses in the future.

Sonam Kapoor

Source: maxgone.com

I liked Sonam in Delhi 6 but she totally annoyed me in Aisha. Her voice grates my nerves for some reason. More famous for her wardrobe than her movies. She is also the daughter of Anil Kapoor (the sleazy host in Slumdog Millionaire and President of Kamistan in 24).

Sonakshi Sinha

Source: doormagazine.com

She is a classic Indian beauty. I think she has a very promising career and she will grow and mature in her acting. She was in Dabaang with Salman.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Trailer

I had the strangest dream today in which a girl blackmailed me to post the last chapter of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and e-mail it to all my friends. Also in the dream a creepy Ken Doll came to life came to life and married a Chelsy Davy look alike. Also for some unexplainable reason Scheduler I mean Jung Il Woo was in it. I never dream about celebrities. It was really weird.

Maybe it was my subconscious telling me to post this trailer. I wasn't planning to although I am a big Harry Potter Fan.

Intro to Bollywood Actresses (Part 1)

Bollywood is known for its gorgeous actresses who romance the actors and dance exquisitely. These actresses are not just pretty faces but talented actors. I must confess I sometimes watch Bollywood movies only because my favourite heroine is in it.

Madhuri Dixit

Source: yahind.com

If Shahrukh Khan is considered the King of Bollywood, then surely Madhuri is the Queen. She is a graceful dancer, powerful actor, and a natural beauty. I want to smack the punks who call her fat on Youtube. She no fat, she so pretty. Gosh, there are so many movies of her that I like. Hmm, let's see, I loved her in Aaja Nachle, Devdas, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dil to Pagal Hai, Beta... Check out some of her songs on YouTube.

Kajol Devgan

Source: sareetimes.com

She's got an amazing chemistry with SRK. She was the first actress I loved. My aunt looks like her. LOL. She is a very charismatic performer. Watch her in Dilwale Dulhaniya le jaayenge.

Juhi Chawla

Source: chakpak.com

She's got a great smile and excellent comedic timing. Nowadays, she's doing more serious cinema like My Brother is Nikhil. Best friends with SRK.

Aishwarya Rai

Source: tamilmoviegallery.com

She's gorgeous, stunning, beautiful.... Not the best actress but I did like her in Guzaarish. She can also dance. Married to Abhishekh Bachhan and daughter-in-law of Amitabh.

Vidya Balan

Source: m3chennai.com
My new girl crush. She is a great actress and a natural beauty. She does remind me of Madhuri, both light up the screen with their charisma. I loved her in Parineeta, Ishqiya and No One Killed Jessica.

Rani Mukherjee

Source: topnews.in

She is Kajol's cousin and stunning. Good actress and has great chemistry with SRK and Abhishek. I like alot of her movies movies but her most fun was Bunty aur Babli.

Karishma Kapoor

Source: maxgone.com

Not my favourite actress but I did like some of her songs and movies. Better actor in my opinion than her sister Kareena who will be in part 2 of the introduction.

P.S: I didn't mean to insert SRK in the post but you can't talk about BW without talking about him.

Baby Faced Beauty: Update

I had written my thoughts on the Korean Drama Baby Faced Beauty. Back then, I had only watched episode 4. Now, after watching ep 7, I feel like many of the problems mentioned in the earlier post remain the same. However, the story is at least moving forward so that makes it more interesting. Also, the little girl is  rude and spoiled but I kinda like her and she does make things more interesting. Daniel Choi's character is starting to bug me less and we are starting to see the romantic plot develop between him and Jang Nara's character. Now, I just hope other characters also grow and mature and that the villains have more depth and become more nuanced.

I will do a proper post on BW actresses later.

Intro to Bollywood Actors (Part 2)

These are the younger actors in Bollywood. One day, they'll take over the Khans. They tend to be on average better looking than the older generation and maintain that body of theirs. I believe all of these guys have a six pack.  Some of them have been in the industry longer than the others even though they are of similar age group.

Shahid Kapoor

Source: thehindu.com

He has improved his acting abilities and matured into his looks. I loved him in Jab We Met and liked his performance in Kaminey as well. He needs to pick better movies.

John Abraham

Source: indiangossips.com

Not a very good actor although I did like him in Dostana. He is good eye candy, eh?

Imran Khan

Source: maxgone.com

Imran is the nephew of Aamir Khan. He is cute and a good actor. However, like Shahid he just picks some bad movies. I am looking forward to seeing him in Delhi Belly. Watch him in Jaane Tu Ya Na Jaane.

Ranbir Kapoor

Source: radiosargam.com
I don't think Ranbir is good looking. Before I get murdered by hordes of fan girls, let me say he is a very good actor. He is a good performer and I think he'll go very far in his career. I liked him in Wake up Sid. BTW, he's not related to Shahid.

Prateik Babbar

Source: extramirchi.com

Prateik's mom Smita Patil was one of India's finest actresses. It seems like Prateik inherited that ability. I loved him in Mumbai Diaries (Dhobi ghat). He's one of the younger actors to watch out for.

Kunal Kapoor

Source: bollywoodhott.com

Wow, there are a lot of Kapoors in Bollywood. LOL. Kunal is one fine looking specimen and he can act. I must say we don't see much of him which is a pity. I liked him in Rang De Basanti and Aaja Nachle.

Like my previous posts, I do not mention all the young actors in Bollywood. Please look forward to my intro to Bollywood actresses.

Intro to Bollywood Actors (Part 1)

Bollywood Cinema or Hindi Cinema is only one of the film industries in India. Since there are many languages spoken across India, there are various film industries supporting that language, culture and ethnicity. Many people have the wrong impression that Bollywood is the only cinema because it is the most prolific and there are a lot more Hindi speakers in India.

Bollywood actors on average tend to be a lot more older than their Asian counterparts. Whereas in East Asia you have a lot of young idols who dabble in Television and films, it is not the case in Bollywood. The most succesfull actors in Bollywood now are in their 40's. There are younger actors and I'll be introducing them seperately in Part 2.  Bollywood is also full of nepotism and clan led and therefore, most of the actors belong to Filmi Families. Unlike my intro to Taiwanese actors or Japanese actors, I am not just mentioning my favourite actors because some actors I do not like  have some very popular movies in Bollywood. Also, I know a lot more about it, so you'll get a more nuanced view from me.

The 4 Khans: Bollywood's most famous actors.

Chances are that if you'll ever see a Bollywood movie, it will be starring a Khan. They all have different appeals and acting abilities.

Shahrukh Khan

Source: bollywoodhott.com

He is probably one of the most famous Bollywood actor and also know as SRK and King Khan. He is very charismatic and loved by legions of women. The role that garnered him a lot of attention was actually a negative role (a villain). He then reinvented his image to play a quintessential Bollywood romantic hero in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Recently, Shahrukh has broadened his acting horizons by doing roles in Chak de India and Swades. These movies are notable because his acting is very natural and subtle.

Aamir Khan

Source: our-kerala.com

He is my favourite Khan of Bollywood. He is known to be a perfectionist and is probably one of the best actors in Bollywood. His movie Lagaan that he starred in was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Foreign Picture in 2001. His production company is known for supporting movies that are atypical Bollywood. That is the movies have no song or dance or have good script or not romance or over the top stuff Bollywood is known for. Some of my favourite movies of him are Dil Chahata Hai, Mumbai Diaries (Dhobi Ghat) and Taare Zameen Par.

Salman Khan

Source:bollywoodhott.com

He is Bollywood's bad boy who has served jail time and known for abusing his famous ex Aishwarya Rai. However, for some reason kids love him and I mean love this guy. He's not all bad as he does support poor folks in India and does a lot of charity work. Oh, also he's known for dating some of the most beautiful women on Planet Earth. I really don't see the appeal.  You can probably guess, he's my least favourite of all the Khans. Nevertheless, he has been part of some entertaining Bollywood movies. He's not a very good actor but does have popular appeal and was part of Dabaang (a very popular Bollywood movie).

Saif Ali Khan

Source: bollypatrika.com

His mum was one of my favourite Bollywood actress and his dad is a royal. He comes from a background of privilege. I hated his earlier work but he has tremendously improved his acting. All you fans of Shakespeare must see Omkara, an adaptation of Othello. Saif plays Iago and he's just amazing. He was also in Dil Chahta Hai.

Akshay Kumar

Source: themidaymasala.com

He is a very popular actor and I like him as a person but sadly makes a lot of dumb comedies. If that's your thing, go ahead watch his movies.

Hrithik Roshan

Source: chakpak.com

He's one of the best looking Bollywood actors. He can also dance, act and make you fall in love with him. I tremendously enjoyed him in Dhoom 2 and Lakshya.

Amitabh Bachhan

Source: nextbollywood.com

He's been part of a lot of movies and he's also one of Bollywood's most famous actors. He is the host of India's version of Who wants to be a Millionaire. He is a talented actor. I like a lot of his movies especially the one in 1970's so go check out his filmography.

There are some famous old actors like Sanjay Dutt that I have left out but frankly the above mentioned actors are the most popular and loved. Part II will have younger Bollywood actors like Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham and Imran Khan.

49 Days: Thoughts and Reflections and The Mentalist Finale

Sorry for not blogging but I needed some time to reflect on the amazing Korean show 49 days and The Mentalist Season 3 Finale. Before I go any further, Let me say, this discussion contains spoilers. Please stop if you still have not seen the finale.

Wow, the finale. It was amazing. While, I was watching episode 19, my sister remarked that Yi Kyung probably wasn't going to end up romantically with Kang. It just made sense. From the beginning, I had guessed that the tears were going to come fom Kang, Seo Woo and In Jung so I wasn't shocked. But, what was pleasant was how the events I expected from the beggining came in such a way in the later episodes that they became surprising. I was surprised by the whole Yi Kyung being Ji hyun's sister. I didn't think it was necessary but I wasn't unhappy about it. Now, to the most important revelation.  Ji Hyun dies. Was I sad? Yes. Did it make sense for her to die? Sorta yeah! Sure, I wanted my Ji hyun to have a fairytale ending with Kang. I loved these characters. But the story is about life and death. Life is never easy and death is unexpected. 49 Days was a boon for Ji Hyun because she could protect her family, reconnect with a person who truly loved her and live a life that made a difference. 49 days is in the same league as the drama Devil (Mawang). They are the sort of shows that entertain you but also make the viewers think, reflect , ponder.

49 Days is a Must watch Korean Drama

Now, to The Mentalist Finale. It is an American TV show I've been watching for 3 years. This and Castle are my favourite crime shows. Okay, I also really liked Body of Proof this season. Um, why am I talking about it? Red John is exposed in this finale or is he? The ending left me feeling uncomfortable yet satisfied. Wow, probably the best finale in this shows history. I'll be honest, I didn't like Craig and knew from the start of this episode that he would be the mole. Glad he's dead.  I expect to see a lot more of Hightower. I really liked her. Do you think Lisbon survives the gun shots. And Patrick, does he descent more into darkness or does he finally confront his own demons? I have so many questions, I cannot wait for Season 4.

P.S; I'll do a intro to Bollywood actors. Super excited! Also, I still have a lot more to say about Baby faced Beauty.

Baby Faced Beauty Conundrum

I've been watching Baby Faced Beauty. This is my first drama of the main leads. Gosh, I've been disappointed. First of all, I hate female characters that are stupid. Sure, the character has some talent but the way she takes abuse, it makes me cringe. The premise of the show is about a 34 year old lady mistaken to be much younger and she gets a job because of that. Jang Nara's character is supposed to be 34 and pretend 25. Yet, she seems to act so dumb. She's supposed to be sweet but She's a 34 year old. I feel no maturity in the character. I mean when you are in your 30's, you are still young but still have some life experiences and maturity. The male lead is dorky but so far he's grating on my nerves. The villains have no depth. One of the reasons I like 49 days so much is that the villains are three dimensional. They are not your stock baddies. You get to see some insight in the way they act. I know it is unfair to judge a drama with just 4 episodes so far and I am hoping it gets better. But, still, show you better improve with character motivations and storyline. At least, I am happy with Best Love. Hong Sisters have never let me down. 49 Days is ending this week. So sad but excited at the same time. Oh, Did anyone saw the season finale of The Good Wife. I found the last scene not much of a surprise. But, they did set up nicely for future conflicts.

5 Dolls

I've mentioned in the older posts that I wasn't really feeling any of the new groups. However, 'Like this or that' from 5 dolls is really stuck in my head. I might just give them a chance after this song.

Five Hottest Korean Idols

This is my list of hot Korean Idols. Yes, they are all male and we are talking about hot and sexy, not cute. So, don't get mad if I don't mention members of Shinee. Cute, yes! Sexy, no!
So, here we go.

1. T.O.P

Source: weheartit.com

Are you surprised? He is sooooooooo sexy that um it is hard to describe what he does to my itty bitty heart.

2. Siwon

Source: fanpop.com

Cuz, Siwon is one handsome man. And he's playing Ren. Yipeee! Favourite member from SuJu. Also the reason, I am into K-pop.

3. Jaejoong (Hero)

Source: asianpopcorn.com

Oh, he's so incredibly beautiful that it hurts to look at him. His looks during his debut could be described as cute but now he can only be described as handsome and manly. LOL.

4. Jay Park

Source: helookpop.com

Oh, he's so handsome and I've never thoughts of his looks to be feminine. Super hot body and sexy dance moves. Complete package and he's fluent in English too.

5. Taeyang

Source: taeyangsol.com

Oh, I do love my Big Bang Boys. Taeyang has a sexy body and a nice voice. Love him :D

I've got SHINee Fever!

When I was first introduced to Shinee, I hated them. I couldn't listen to Ring Ding Dong and found the boys too skinny. Thought SM were starving them, really.  After a year, a friend just happened to play Lucifer and lo behold I actually started liking them. This past week, I've been watching Hello Baby (their variety show). I love these guys and am super obsessed. I do feel kinda pervy liking Key and Minho cuz they are the same age as my brother. Taeimin is just a year older than my sister so yeah, gah I fell perverted liking him too. So young, these boys. Atleast they like Noonas :P  Atleast Onew was born in the same year as me. So, yeah, I totally have Onew Condition. Jonghyun is a sweetie pie although he's got himself a girlfriend.  Anyway, this post had no point except me gushing about them. Of course, any post with Shinee can't suck. Hope they have awesome success with their Japanese debuts.

P.S: Super excited about 2ne1's comeback and Lie to me is out. Still haven't found Eng subs.

2. Kuroi Namida (Nana)

3. Suna no Oshiro (Vampire Knight)

3. What's up people? (Death note)

Strange things I've learned from Korean Variety Shows!

K-Pop gives you insight into popular Korean culture that probably a history book would never provide. So, here are some strange things I've learned about Korean culture.

Koreans like a Small Face

If anyone in Canada compliments you of your beauty, they probably will not mention the smallness of your face. From what I can infer, a small face is desirable in Korea. However, it seems like any of the hot Korean celebrities have a small face. To be honest, their faces just look normal to me. But, what do I know? I am really curious to know what Koreans consider a big face. Is it considered hideous?

Here's a link to a video where Hyunah from 4 minute talks about her small face and compares it to a yogurt drink. It is around 2:00 min. Yup, it is from Mr. Teacher

I know I am using Hyunah as an example but there are countless Korean celebrities who have been described to have a small face.

Koreans love their 'V' line

Again if someone compliments a Canadian about their V line, they would probably go WTH? But, in Korean context it makes perfect sense. V line is what you get when you lose the fat around your face and your features are more angular, sharper.

Wrong abbreviations

Oh, my. It seems Koreans abbreviate English words without realizing the consequences. I know, English is not their first language but the results are too comical to not mention. Again from 4 minute. This time, the culprit is Ji Hyun. It is around 1: 30. Yes, she called herself a bagel girl.

Ah, K-pop. We love it.

BTW, when I mean strange, I mean different but not bad.

Lonely By 2ne1

The girls are back. The song is soooo good. Super excited, hope YG chooses to do a concert in Toronto one day. Oh and I love what they are wearing. I want them.

Links, Links, Links!

I removed the Bin Laden Post because um, my mom told me to do so and you know Mother's day is coming. So, yeah, had to do it. I was too lazy to rewrite the post on Korean culture which I'll post by tomorrow. But, meanwhile posting links to other blogs I go. I am currently watching 49 days, Drunken to Love you and Sunny Happiness. To read recaps and other news, I 've started going to this blog. It's really good. It's called A koala's Playground.

For gossip not just about Bollywood but rest of Indian entertainment industry (Telugu, Tamil etc), check out Filmi girl.

Both of these sites are great and the bloggers invest a lot of time. They are so knowledgeable. I am just a student whose purpose for this blog is to have fun and to get my family and friends watching Asian dramas.

Anyhoo enjoy. Will do a proper post tomorrow, ok.

Favourite Japanese actresses

I had some issues with blogger yesterday and lost a whole post. I guess, I 'll have to rewrite that entire post. Also want to mention my Internet contract with a company is expiring in 2 days. Expect less posts, although I'll probably try posting through my brother's laptop.

Now, I am introducing some of my favourite Japanese actresses. They are talented, beautiful and they get to hang out with our favourite Japanese actors. Ah, life is so unfair :P

Horikita Maki

Source: asianbite.com

I've seen her J- dramas the most. A naturally gifted actress who balances light rom com such as Atashinchi no Danshi with more serious roles such as in Innocent Love. She's also very pretty.

Ayase Haruka

Source: qety.com

Like Maki, she's also very talented. I loved her role in Hotaru no Hikari. She's incredibly beautiful and popular.

Inoue Mao

Source: asianpopcorn.com

If you've seen the Japanese Hana Yori Dango live action series, you know what a beautiful actress she is. She was my favourite Tsukushi. Also liked her in First Kiss and Love Shuffle.

Yamada Yu

Source: yourfashionblog.com

She's constantly improving as an actress, I actually liked her in Mei chan no shitsuji. But the drama that made me like her was Seigi no Mikata.

Tanimura Mitsuki

Source: asiacue.com

I don't think she's the prettiest Japanese actress but I did like her in Cat Street. Sadly, other than Mei chan no shitsuji, I haven't really seen her other work.

Kashii Yu

Source: samvitinfotech.com

She's got a unique face. I liked her in Yukan Club, Innocent love and Death Note. She is a good actress.

Naka Riisa

Source: bionicbong.com

She's very cute and I liked her in Yankee kun to Megane Chan. I now want to see her other dramas.

I know this list doesn't have some very popular Japanese actresses but sadly I haven't seen a lot of J-dramas. Also, most of what I've seen just happen to have Maki in it.

Canadian Elections and Osama Post-Death Analysis

Oh, what a historic election. Conservatives got a majority, NDP is the official opposition. Oh, did I mention first Green party win? Let's hope the Parliament decides to co-operate and work for once.

Some articles that discuss elections in detail. Here are the links:
Globe and Mail

Toronto Star

Lots of articles on How Osama's death will impact America and US-Pak relations. Here are some good ones from Foreign Policy.

Osama's Dead, But how much does it matter?

With Bin Laden gone, what will U.S and Pakistan talk about?

I know it is strange for a primarily Asian pop culture blog to talk about Politics. But, I think everyone should participate in democracy as it is their civic duty. Look at what is happening at Libya and Syria. The folks in these countries are dying precisely because they want their voices to be heard and have a right to elect their officials. Also, with globalization, what happens in a far away country does impact us.

P.S: I will be doing a post on Japanese actresses and Strange things I've learned about Korea through K-pop.

Favourite Japanese actors

Gosh, there are so many Japanese actors I like. So, rather than an intro, I'll just list some of my favourite. They are all very popular and hawt. So, here I go.

Shun Oguri

Source: asianpopcorn.com

Shun is a versatile actor who is well very yummy looking. See his performance in Hana Kimi and he'll forever leave a favourable impression as Rui. My first show of him was Gokusen where he played a thug. See, that's the thing about him. He can play a thug and a sensitive F4 member equally convincingly. But, I've also seen him in all Hana Kimi dramas, movie. Also liked him in the movies Crows Zero and Azumi.

Kamenashi Kazuya

Source: asianpopcorn.com

If you've read my previous blog posts, you know that I love Kame. He's the best actor out of all the Johnny Boys. His best role was in Nobuta wo Produce. Also seen him in the live action adaptation of Wallflower, Gokusen 2, One-Pound Gospel. Also check out old episodes of Cartoon Kat-tun ( a variety show).

Jin Akanishi

Source: asianpopcorn.com

Jin like Kame is forever in my heart. Of course, the first drama that I saw him in was Gokusen 2. Also loved him in Yukaan Club in which Mike He guest starred. Not as many dramas as Kame but check out Cartoon Kat-tun.

Osamu Mukai

Source: askactor.com

Okay, first drama of him was Nodame Cantabile. Also saw him in Mei chan no shitsuji. But loved him in Atashinchi no Danshi. I am really looking forward to his acting career. He has a great screen presence and very cute.

Jun Kaname

Source: photobucket.com

He's hot, tall and sexy. Oh, I also find him a decent actor. Watch him in Ryusei no Kizuna and Atashinchi no Danshi.

Ikuta Toma

Source: asianpopcorn.com

I loved him in Hana Kimi. Gosh, Horikita Maki gets the sexiest co-stars. He really shows his acting prowess in Maou, a remake of Korean drama Devil.

Yamashita Tomohisa (Yamapi)

Source: asianpocorn.com

He has an amazing chemistry with Horikita Maki. You'll seriously fall for him in Nobuta wo Produce. Also loved him in Kurosagi (movie and drama) and in Buzzer Beat.

Hongo Kanata

Source: asianpopcorn.com

Oh, this guy. He'll go far, I am telling you. Saw him in Yankee-kun to Megane Chan. Still haven't seen Gantz but looking forward because he and Kenichi Matsuyama are in it.

Kenichi Matsuyama

Source: asianpopcorn.com

First role of him that I saw was in Nana (movie). Loved him in The Death Note movies as L. Probably one of the most popular and successful young actor in Japan right now.

Miura Haruma

Source: asianpopcorn.com

Okay, he's my boyfriend. At least, in my dreams, k. Super hot and good actor. Introduced in what else but Gokusen 3 (good at introducing hot boys, that show). Also saw him in Bloody Monday. He played the role of Kazehaya in live adaptation of Kimi ni Todoke. ♥♥♥♥♥
