Delhi Belly : movie Review

Source: India-forums.com

I promised a movie review for Delhi Belly but became too busy. Well, I finally saw the movie and I liked it. It is a spoiler free review because I want y'all to see it yourself. The movie revolves around three friends Tashi, Nitin and Arup who are asked to drop off a package on behalf of Tashi's girlfriend Sonia. The guys make a mistake and it creates a huge misunderstanding and they get in a lot of trouble with some gangsters.
The movie's plot was okay but what was refreshing about this movie was its openness. Previous Hindi comedies hinted at sex but were never brave enough to openly laugh about it. Well, this movie is full of toilet humor, swear words and sex which is a staple of many American comedies. My mom thought it was vulgar but she hasn't seen Harold and Kumar goes to White castle which is an excellent comedy BTW.
But, I digress, I liked that the protagonists made mistakes, were more three dimensional. I enjoyed the realistic cinematography. I love seeing "real India". You know the one with bad infrastructure, cows, crazy traffic. With the exception of one song, most of the songs are used as background score and used very briefly. I was surprised because I liked the music videos. But, it worked overall and moved the plot along. Most of all, this movie made me laugh, a sign of a successful comedy. That's because that is the India I grew up in. Good comedy and I've come to expect some thing different from Mr. Aamir Khan.

My verdict: Watch it, it is funny.

p.s: There is an English version of this movie.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review

So. during the long weekend, I had the pleasure of watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. It is a fun movie, I enjoyed the soundtrack which was very mellow. The story is about three best friends, one of whom is getting married and they all embark on a bachelor trip to Spain and learn about what really matters to them. I enjoyed the movie but I wondered how many Indians could really relate to this. These guys are good looking , wealthy and have a lot going for them. So, to see them deal with their problems was fun. But, most people cannot relate to this movie because really most of us do not have the luxury to resolve our conflicts during a trip to beautiful Spain. The cinematography was perfect. They really captured the beauty of Spain. The guys can all act and very easy on the eyes. Katrina isn't horrible and I think this movie has one of the best kisses in Indian Cinema. Big Props to the wardrobe person because I loved the way the men were styled.

Verdict: Enjoyed the movie and I'll recommend it simply for its cinematography.

19 Movie Review

I decided to review of this movie because I couldn't find one. Nineteen is a movie starring T.O.P, Seungri and Huh Yi Jae. The movie is about three 19 year olds who somehow become the prime suspects in a murder. In terms of plot, I could figure it out within the first ten minute who was going to get killed and who the real murderer is. This does not mean the movie is without merit. I loved seeing different parts of Korea. Cinematography is very nicely done. T.O.P is a surprisingly good actor and even Seungri was okay. The movie explores difficulties of being teenagers. They are at a cusp of adulthood yet all three characters grapple with uncertainty and doubts. The movie did remind me of The Breakfast club even though they are dissimilar in plot. The whole bonding of three kids with varied backgrounds was reminiscent of that movie.  Although, I must add the whole three unlikely teenagers bonding was better done in Nobuta wo Produce. Even the issues teenagers have to deal with were better in that show.

My verdict: the movie is decent, watch it if you are a big fan of the leads.

P.S: If you are easily offended by swear words, I apologize. I do try to not use bad words in this blog. However, even thinking about Osama brought out some colorful language. Howver in the case kids view my blog I have removed the word, k:)

Band Baaja Baraat movie review

Source:lifestyle.iloveindia.com

Oh, Bollywood. Why don't you give us more movies like Band Baaja Barrat. It was released last year in December, I believe. But, I only watched it like a week ago. Before I even go into Plot summary, I just wanna say, I really love the female character in this movie. Okay now to the review.
The movie is about two young college graduates who decide to open a business of wedding planning. The female character is Shruti Kakkar and it was her idea of wedding planning. Bitto Sharma, the male lead just joins her because he does not want to go back to his village. He literally begs Shruti to take him as his business partner. Shruti doesn't want to because she doesn't want to mix business with love and is worried he'll fall in love with her. Both characters compliment each other beautifully in both business and life. Eventually, Shruti falls in love with him but will Bitto reciprocate and break the rule of not mixing business with love.

Okay now to spoiler ridden discussion. okay, I don't give way any plot but some people don't want to know anything.
One thing i loved about this movie was the characters. They were lovable yet flawed. It was also nice to see no villains in the movie. the characters are their worst enemies.  Shruti was such a refreshing character from usual Bollywood trope. She was independent, had a career yet she was lovable, sentimental human. I also loved how they portrayed sex in the movie. Yes, this movie has a sex scene, not anything graphic. Oh, it also has some kissing scenes. I didn't feel repulsed watching them like I usually do with some Bollywood movies. I actually thought they were done beautifully. Bitto, I liked him as a character but I found that his character didn't mature as much as Shruti. Still, Bitto was a fun male lead. Spoilers endeth here.

Now to the songs, I love the music in this movie and it wasn't jarring. The music fit the movie perfectly.

My verdict: Definately watch this movie and but the soundtrack.

Tanu Weds Manu Movie review

First of all, I 'd like to say I made a mistake in the last post that I have corrected. I am doing the wedding theme movie review today and tomorrow and not on Friday.

Source: photofunt.com

Now to the review. This is the spoiler free discussion.

The story is about Manu, an NRI who comes to India to visit his family in Delhi and um to get married. In the process of seeing girls his parents found, he meets Tanu, a UP girl. Her parents try to pass her off as a traditional obedient Indian girl except the audience suspects it is not quite the case. Anyhoo, Tanu never actually gets to see Manu because she took sleeping pills and is subsequently out. Manu falls in love with Tanu at first sight but she does not reciprocate the feelings. The girl's got a boyfriend, smokes, drinks and hence not the ideal Indian nari. She forces Manu to break off the engagement. Manu is heartbroken but ends up at his childhood friends wedding and lo behold the bride to be's best friend is Tanu. Will they or will they not fall in love?

The movie is full of cliches which i usually don't mind in a masala movie. But gosh, this movie was disappointing. First of all, the two main protagonists Tanu and Manu. Tanu is a spoiled, bratty selfish girl who does not want to marry a guy her parents chose because she does not want them to make that decision for her. Okay, I get that. But, here's the problem. Tanu isn't independent, has her own job and relies on her parent's money. Her choice in boys is questionable. But what is the worse is how she keeps tramping on Manu's heart despite him helping her over and over again. He loves this girl and I really don't get it. I see no character growth and found tanu selfish to the end.
Manu, Manu, oh boy. This man is a noble idiot. He keeps letting this girl walk all over her. sure, he loves her but I don't understand why. Does he love her because she's pretty or he interested in her because she doesn't fit the mold of homely Indian girl. That's the feeling I got from the movie.

The movie does have  awesome secondary characters who are the voice of reason in the whole movie. I liked them more than Tanu and Manu. The movie also got a fun soundtrack. My favourite is Jugni as two lines from the song remind me of my late great grandmother. Sadi gali is also good.

My verdict: Buy the soundtrack, don't bother watching the movie.
